Why Earning Your CDA Is Essential for Career Growth in Early Childhood Education
When I first entered the world of early childhood education, I had no idea what I was doing. Coming from a retail and sales background, I was unfamiliar with child development and running a childcare program. As a mom, I was nervous about sending my daughter to a center with people I didn’t know. I still remember how it felt—anxious and uncertain. Now, as a childcare director, that memory shapes how I approach my job. I can relate to the parents walking through the door for a tour because I’ve been there too.
After spending a year in the field and moving up the ranks quickly, I was promoted to director of an afterschool program. That’s when I realized that to truly excel, I needed more than just on-the-job experience. I needed to earn my CDA. That's when I decided to pursue my Child Development Associate (CDA) credential. Little did I know, earning my CDA would not only help me grow professionally but also became a personal lifeline during a challenging time in my life. At the time, I was going through a divorce, and focusing on the CDA gave me a sense of control and hope. It helped me focus on the future, on the growth that lay ahead, rather than on the past.
The Power of Earning Your CDA: A Strong Foundation for Professional Growth
The CDA was my foundation—the starting point for a long and rewarding career in early childhood education. It was structured and comprehensive, covering everything from child development to curriculum design to program management. The portfolio I created as part of the CDA process required me to reflect on my teaching philosophy and demonstrate my competency in six key areas, each of which has shaped me into the well-rounded educator and leader I am today. After earning my CDA, I went on to earn an associate's degree, a bachelor’s in early childhood leadership and administration, and even graduate certifications in small business management. But no matter where my education has taken me, the CDA will always be where it all began.
How Earning Your CDA Benefits Your Career
For anyone new to the field or looking to advance in their career, I cannot recommend earning your CDA enough. It’s more than just a credential—it’s a comprehensive pathway to becoming a better educator and leader. As a childcare director, I’ve seen firsthand how the CDA not only helps educators build a strong foundation but also gives them the confidence they need to succeed. The CDA covers essential areas like child development, health and safety, working with families, and curriculum planning. These foundational skills are crucial for anyone in early childhood education, whether you’re leading a program or just starting out.
Career Advancement: Unlocking New Opportunities
The CDA is also incredibly valuable for career advancement. After earning my CDA, I was able to confidently take on leadership roles and advocate for the quality of education and care we provide to children. Today, I’m proud to have six staff members currently working on their CDA portfolios. I believe deeply in investing in their growth and in their careers. By supporting their pursuit of the CDA, I’m not only helping them become stronger professionals but also strengthening our entire team and improving the quality of care we provide to our families.
Boost Your Credibility and Stand Out in a Competitive Job Market
The CDA is a credential that can also set you apart in a competitive job market. For new teachers, it offers credibility and recognition, demonstrating to employers that you have the essential knowledge and skills to nurture and educate young children effectively. For directors, it shows a commitment to maintaining high standards and promoting professional growth. Most importantly, it instills confidence in parents. When families see that the educators in a childcare center hold their CDA, they know their children are in capable hands, cared for by professionals who are dedicated to their growth and well-being.
Earning Your CDA: A Lifeline for Personal and Professional Growth
Looking back, earning my CDA was more than just a stepping stone—it was a transformative experience that shaped who I am today as an educator, leader, and advocate for early childhood education. It helped me grow not only in my career but also personally, at a time when I needed it the most. If you’re considering earning your CDA, or if you're a director looking to build a strong, professional team, I encourage you to take that first step. The journey will equip you with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to succeed—and, just as importantly, it will help you make a meaningful impact on the children and families you serve.
